The road to BCorp–we’re on it!

TITLE PITCURE Ferns

It’s no secret that we spend a lot of time outside. OceanRock Adventure is built on a love for the outdoors and helping people share our passion. Every year we take groups into the wild, from the mountains and moorlands of the Lake District, Brecon Beacons, and Dartmoor to the river Wye and Severn and everywhere in between.

Yet we face a reality that affects everything we do: climate change. This challenge is why we are pursuing B Corp status. By aspiring to become a B Corp, we will improve and formalise our principles regarding people and our commitment to the planet, helping to preserve our cherished wild spaces for future generations.

What is a B Corp?

You may have seen the B logo out and about, whether that be on clothing brands such as Sea Salt, Finisterre or Patagonia or in the supermarket on products such as Proper Chips and Ben and Jerry’s. But what actually is a B Corp?

According to B Lab, the certifiers of B Corp status, certified B Corps are a ‘global community of thousands of purpose driven companies working together to use business as a force of good by measuring, managing and improving their social and environmental impact.’

Our journey to becoming B Corp certified.

The B Corp process is not easy – it’s being continually updated, ensuring that their standards reflect that of the changing world. Becoming a B Corp and subsequently maintaining B Corp status is hard – but that is a good thing. Becoming a B Corp is important to us. We are pushing to formalise and improve our existing social and environmental contributions through the B Corp certification process and development of our OceanRock Foundation.

We aren’t expecting to qualify for B Corp status first try – if it was that easy, everyone would do it. Instead, we are starting the ball rolling, first of all by registering ourselves for the B Impact Assessment and then gathering the data and documentation needed to submit it. We will then use the results to identify and implement areas of improvement.

A key part of the B Corp process is transparency. When we certify, our B Impact Score will be publicly available on both our website and B Corp’s. In the meantime, we will be sharing the process as we go.

This is an exciting step forward for OceanRock, putting our principles into practice to become certified as something we are proud to be a part of.

We are in this for the long run, for people and the planet.
